HONORING SANDRA LAKE FOR HER MYRIAD ACCOMPLISHMENTS

     WHEREAS, Sandra Lake was born in San Pedro De Macoris, Dominican Republic. She

2

is a daughter of William Lake and Minerva Bautista, and the very proud mother of three

3

daughters, Glamirssy, Eivony, and Diandra; and

4

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lake graduated from the East University of San Pedro, and earned a

5

Bachelor's in Education, and continuing her education, she received a Master of Science, Human

6

Services from Springfield College. She became a teacher, working in various public high

7

schools, and also served as a professor at a local university. In 1997, she received the prestigious

8

"Gully Award" for education excellence from the Lyons Club Santo Domingo Chapter, and in

9

1998, she received the teacher of the year award from the Central East University faculty of

10

Administrative Science and Systems; and

11

     WHEREAS, In 1999, Ms. Lake moved to Rhode Island and shortly thereafter, founded

12

the Extraordinary Woman Award (EWA), which is presented annually to commemorate

13

International Women's Day; and

14

     WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Ms. Lake, the EWA program expanded, becoming

15

the Women's Development Institute (WDI) which creates conferences, workshops, and various

16

support programs designed to improve women's leadership and promote professional

17

development and personal enhancement by covering various topics that affect young Latino

18

women and potential community leaders; and

19

     WHEREAS, The Institute, under the guidance of Ms. Lake, created and developed the

20

Extraordinary Women of the Future and Young Men of Value, a leadership program designed for

Latino teens with the aim of developing personal skills, confidence and leadership dexterity; and

2

     WHEREAS, The Institute also established the Single Mother Annual Conference which

3

addresses the emotional struggles, and social and economic challenges of the single mother, and

4

Proactive Single Mothers which is a program to mentor and support single mothers; and

5

     WHEREAS, In 2007, Ms. Lake was honored with distinguished recognition from the

6

Dominican Independent Award Committee in Rhode Island, and in 2009, she was the recipient of

7

the Excellence Award in the State of Rhode Island for community service. In 2014, she received

8

the Quetzal Award from The Guatemalan Center of New England and in 2019, she received the

9

Dr. Martin Luther King Special Award from the RI State Holiday Commission and Ebenezer

10

Baptist Church; and

11

     WHEREAS, Sandra Lake is a woman of great faith and a true Latina leader, who

12

inspires, supports and fights for the betterment of her community and our society, and we are

13

proud to recognize her contributions; now, therefore be it

14

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

15

hereby honors Sandra Lake for her myriad accomplishments, and wishes her much continued

16

success in all her future endeavors; and be it further

17

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

18

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Sandra Lake.
