HONORING RHODE ISLAND SUPREME COURT JUSTICE GILBERT V. INDEGLIA ON

THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Gilbert V. Indeglia has served the State of Rhode Island and

2

its citizens with honor and integrity as a Justice for the last thirty-one years, first as an Associate

3

Judge of the District Court, then as a Superior Court Justice, and ultimately as a Rhode Island

4

Supreme Court Justice; and

5

     WHEREAS, Gilbert Indeglia was born in Providence, in 1941. He graduated from

6

Classical High School in 1959, cum laude from Boston College in 1963, and with distinction

7

from the University of Michigan Law School in 1966. He also served our nation with honor and

8

distinction as a member of the Rhode Island Air National Guard for six years; and

9

     WHEREAS, After graduation and admission to the Rhode Island and Federal Bars, he

10

began his distinguished legal career as a staff attorney in the Office of Economic Opportunity at

11

Neighborhood Legal Services in Providence. He later practiced law with the firm Abedon &

12

Abedon, partnered for seven years in a firm with his uncle, Angelo Cianciarulo, and subsequently

13

established a solo practice for ten years until he was appointed to the District Court; and

14

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Gilbert Indeglia had a distinguished record of service at the

15

local level, serving first as a Probate Judge and Assistant Town Solicitor in South Kingstown

16

from 1971 to 1973, and later as a member of the Town Council from 1977 to 1984, where he

17

served as Vice President for two years and President for four years; and

18

     WHEREAS, In 1984, the Honorable Gilbert Indeglia was elected to the Rhode Island

19

House of Representatives, where he served three terms from 1984 to 1989. He was a member of

the House Judiciary Committee and was elected to the position of Deputy Minority Leader.

Representative Indeglia was a highly respected member of the House known for his thoughtful

3

and insightful commentary during legislative debates; and

4

     WHEREAS, Justice Indeglia was appointed to serve on the Rhode Island District Court

5

by Governor Edward DiPrete, and served from 1989 to 2000, when he was appointed to the

6

Rhode Island Superior Court by Governor Lincoln Almond, serving ten years. In 2010, he

7

became one of the few justices to have served on all three state judicial branches in Rhode Island

8

when he was appointed to the Rhode Island Supreme Court by Governor Carcieri, a position he

9

held until 2020. He has always been highly regarded for his legal acumen and for having a superb

10

judicial temperament; and

11

     WHEREAS, Justice Indeglia is a former member of the Supreme Court’s Advisory

12

Committee on the Code of Judicial Ethics and the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education

13

Commission. He has also served as an Instructor at the Roger Williams University School of

14

Law, and is a co-founder and former member of the Board of Directors of the Courthouse Center

15

for the Arts, and co-founder and member of the South Kingstown Land Trust. He is married to

16

Elizabeth Indeglia and together they have two children and three grandchildren; now, therefore be

17

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

19

hereby congratulates Rhode Island Supreme Court Justice Gilbert Indeglia on his forthcoming

20

retirement in June of 2020. We thank him for his forty-nine years of exemplary service to the

21

State of Rhode Island, and we wish him a most happy, healthy, and joyous retirement; and be it

22

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

24

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Justice Gilbert Indeglia.
