EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF THEODORE WOODS

     WHEREAS, Theodore "Ted" Woods, formerly of Providence, was the son of the late

2

Ethel Woods and Jesse Woods. He was the beloved husband of Constance Jones for fifty-six

3

years; and

4

     WHEREAS, Mr. Woods grew up on Benefit Street on the East Side of Providence and

5

later on Federal Hill. He attended Providence Public Schools and graduated from Central High

6

School. He was a stellar and recognized youth athlete in the sports of baseball, basketball and

7

football; and

8

     WHEREAS, After High School, Mr. Woods enlisted in the United States Air Force for

9

three years and then re-enlisted in the United States Army for an additional three years. He was a

10

Vietnam War Veteran and served our nation with honor and distinction. After being honorably

11

discharged from the United States Army, Mr. Woods proceeded to work for the United States

12

Post Office, serving for twenty-eight years until his retirement in 1995; and

13

     WHEREAS, Mr. Woods was a devoted volunteer throughout his life for many

14

organizations throughout the City of Providence. He served the City as a bus monitor, fundraiser

15

for youth sports and activities, as a coach, "Santa Claus", and a youth advocate and mentor. He

16

was a special part of the Bishop McVinney Elementary and Middle Schools, especially when his

17

daughters were students at the school; and

18

     WHEREAS, Mr. Woods leaves behind a distinguished legacy as a coach of both boys

19

and girls basketball in several different leagues. He won his first Rhode Island State

20

Championship as a Boys Middle School Basketball Coach in the 1978-79 season. He also

received numerous awards and honors while serving as a coach, athletic director and volunteer;

2

and

3

     WHEREAS, Mr. Woods returned to public service when he was recruited by the City of

4

Providence to join the City's Recreation Department and lead their after-school programs. He

5

represented the City on numerous youth oriented boards and civic programs. He also served as

6

the Assistant Director of the Sackett Street Recreation Center and was heavily involved in the

7

"Kids Café" after school snack program. He also supported programs at many of the city's other

8

recreation centers; and

9

     WHEREAS, Mr. Woods was a passionate lifetime sports fan who cherished being a

10

season ticket holder for his Providence College basketball and New England Patriots football.

11

Nothing made him happier than relaxing and watching ESPN. Mr. Woods was also a former

12

long-term member of the Prince Hall Masons in Providence; and

13

     WHEREAS, In addition to his wife Constance, Mr. Woods leaves behind his daughters

14

Tracey Woods and Shelley Woods Whiting. He also leaves behind his son-in-law W. Bernard

15

Whiting, Jr., and his grandson Theodore B. Whiting. He is also survived by his brothers Maurice

16

Woods and Frank Woods, and embraced Dara Pincas and her sons Rennan and Mattan as bonus

17

children and grandchildren. He also leaves behind his goddaughters Dawn and Anchantee Lewis

18

and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends across the nation. Mr. Woods was preceded in

19

death by his siblings Elynor Adams, Barbara Clements, Patricia James, James Woods, and

20

Donald Clark; now, therefore be it

21

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

22

expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Mr. Theodore Woods; and be it further

23

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

24

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mrs. Constance Woods and Family.
