EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF ALLENE RAMONA

MAYNARD

     WHEREAS, It is with sincere sadness that this House has learned of the passing of

Allene Ramona Maynard, beloved wife of sixty-two years to the late Richard Matthew Maynard,

cherished mother of Kim Richelle Maynard, Tanya Maynard, and Richard Maynard Jr. and

Cerena Reid, and the proud and doting grandmother of five grandchildren, Dominique Barnes and

her husband, Ty, Diamond Maynard, Tyler Lewis, Kyle Spencer and Trinity Rucker, and two

great-grandchildren, Laila and Landon Barnes; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Maynard, fondly known as “Sister” by her family and many friends,

was the daughter of the late Allen and Sarah Bonay, and the loving sister of Claire Lunsford and

her husband, Eugene, and the late Blanche Taylor and Gloria Smith; and

     WHEREAS, Upon graduation with honors from Central High School, Mrs. Maynard

worked at the State of Rhode Island’s Department of Employment Security as a Clerk-

Stenographer, and later as the Assistant to the Director of Gilbert Stuart High School. She

subsequently joined the Providence Head Start Program working as the Career Development

Coordinator and was awarded scholarships to attend Roger Williams University, where she

received her Associate’s Degree, Magna Cum Laude, followed by her Bachelor’s degree, Cum

Laude, in Public Service Administration and Political Science; and

     WHEREAS, After earning her degrees, Mrs. Maynard became the Personal Assistant to

then-General Treasurer of the State of Rhode Island, Anthony J. Solomon, and later worked as an

Executive Administrative Assistant for the National Education Association and the Providence

American Newspapers. In addition, she was a Clerk in the Senate Majority Leader's Office, had

worked as a State of Rhode Island Voter Registrar Agent, and was appointed by the Governor to

the Rhode Island Commission on Criminal Justice; and

     WHEREAS, A lifelong Democrat, for twelve years, Mrs. Maynard was elected as the

Rhode Island Democratic State Committee Woman for House District 19, and served as a RI

Democratic Party Executive Board member, Board Officer (Corresponding Secretary), and was a

member of several committees. She also served as a Rhode Island Constitutional Delegate from

1985 to 1986, and organized the Young Minority Democrats of RI; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Maynard's astute political insights were often sought by new and

aspiring politicians. She utilized her wealth of knowledge and years of experience helping

campaigns to plan strategies to fight injustice, racial inequality, and promote community change;

and

     WHEREAS, In addition, Mrs. Maynard hosted a television news program with Hank

Bouchard, called Take 12, and was a member of the NAACP, the Urban League Guild of Rhode

Island, serving as a Past President, was a member of the Prince Hall Masonic Temple family, a

past Illustrious Commandress of the Daughter of Isis Constantine Court #8, Areme Chapter #3

Order of the Eastern Star; and

     WHEREAS, Allene Maynard possessed strength, courage, and a strong social

conscience. She served as a role model and inspiration to many, and she will be dearly missed;

now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

extends its deepest condolences on the passing of Allene Ramona Maynard; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Kim Richelle Maynard, Tanya Maynard, and

Richard Maynard Jr.
