EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF ELIZABETH A.

MAHONEY

     WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this House has learned of the passing of

2

Elizabeth A. “Tucky” Mahoney of Newport, Rhode Island; and

3

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Mahoney was born in the City of Newport, the daughter of the late

4

Frederick and Elizabeth White. She attended St. Mary’s school and graduated from St. Catherine

5

Academy in 1956. Upon graduation, she entered the religious Sisters of Mercy as a postulant, and

6

went on to become a Sister of Mercy. She was selected to participate in the Order’s education

7

program, and proceeded to attend the education program at Salve Regina, graduating with a

8

Bachelor’s degree, and later attained a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Rhode

9

Island College; and

10

     WHEREAS, After fifteen years, Mrs. Mahoney prayerfully left religious life and

11

ultimately met her future husband and the love of her life, the Honorable James Mahoney, a

12

former member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives. They were married at St. Mary’s

13

Church in Newport in 1975; and

14

     WHEREAS, For twenty-five years, Mrs. Mahoney served as an educator with the

15

Newport Public School Department where she was well-respected and beloved for her tireless

16

commitment to providing the best educational experience possible to every one of her students;

17

and

18

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Mahoney was also a fixture within the civic culture of Newport, and

19

had served as the Treasurer of the Newport Democratic City Committee in the 1970s. She was an

active and longtime member of St. Augustin’s Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister

2

and lector. She also taught religious education at St. Augustin’s, eventually becoming the

3

Religious Education Coordinator; and

4

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Mahoney always took great pride and joy in her Irish heritage. She was

5

a member of the Board of Directors of the Newport Irish Heritage Association and loved

6

organizing a traditional Irish Tea annually as a way to honor the group’s heritage. She was also an

7

active member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and was honored as Lady of the Year

8

in 2020; and

9

     WHEREAS, In her free time, Mrs. Mahoney loved crafting and enjoyed planning and

10

decorating for important events. She made lovely table centerpieces for many church and

11

Hibernian events. She also enjoyed knitting and made beautiful prayer shawls and infant hats, all

12

of which she donated to Newport Hospital, and had published a Christmas planning book titled

13

“Christmas All Year Round.” Other activities she enjoyed were sewing, swimming, writing

14

letters and baking. Attending weekly and daily Mass was always one of her most important

15

priorities, as was the abiding love she provided daily to her husband, daughter, family members

16

and many friends; and

17

     WHEREAS, In addition to her husband, Mrs. Mahoney leaves behind her daughter

18

Meaghan Rose Mahoney Corr and her husband, Peter and her two grandchildren, James “Jack”

19

and Anne Elizabeth “Annie” Corr. She is also survived by her sisters, Janet Rausch and Barbara

20

Luzzi, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and her beloved friends, Sheila Chenard, Joan

21

Coughlin, Barbie Mureddu, Renie Tharp, Sister Mary Monaghan RSM, and former Sister of

22

Mercy, Gert Connolly; now, therefore be it

23

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

24

expresses its deepest condolences to the Mahoney Family on the passing of Elizabeth A.

25

Mahoney; and be it further

26

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

27

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable James Mahoney and Meaghan

28

Rose Mahoney Corr.
