EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE ALVES FAMILY ON THE PASSING | |
OF THE HONORABLE WILLIAM L. ALVES | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with immense sadness that this House of Representatives has learned of |
2 | the passing of our former colleague, the Honorable William L. "Bud" Alves of West Warwick. |
3 | He was the beloved husband of the late Ann Alves for 57 years. Mr. Alves was born in Bristol but |
4 | was raised and lived in West Warwick for the last eighty years of his life. He was the eldest son |
5 | of the late William "Bill" Alves and Lena Alves; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Mr. Alves was a 1954 graduate of West Warwick High School where he |
7 | earned acclaim as one of the greatest football players and athletes in Rhode Island high school |
8 | sports history. He was a star football, basketball and baseball player for the Wizards, but it was on |
9 | the gridiron where he became most famous. An All-State selection for every sport he played, Mr. |
10 | Alves was named the 1953 School Boy Athlete of the Year. In the fall of 1952, he led West |
11 | Warwick to a State Title in football, scoring 35 touchdowns and 210 points, an incredible record |
12 | that lasted for twenty years. He graduated from West Warwick without ever losing a football |
13 | game in the State of Rhode Island; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Mr. Alves went on to play football at Boston College where he was a |
15 | member of the Greater Boston All-Star Team and graduated in 1958 with a degree in Business |
16 | Management. He went on to have a successful professional career and continued his love of |
17 | sports through coaching, playing golf, and passionately following the athletic exploits of his |
18 | children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews as they participated in various |
19 | West Warwick and Cranston sporting events. Mr. Alves was inducted into the West Warwick |

1 | High School Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Providence Grid Iron Club Hall of Fame in 2007; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Mr. Alves was a distinguished member of the Rhode Island House of |
3 | Representatives for three terms from 1987 to 1993, representing the citizens of West Warwick |
4 | with honor, integrity and tireless devotion. He was a charismatic figure who was well-respected |
5 | and beloved by all who knew him. He also served as a member of the West Warwick Tax |
6 | Assessor Board of Review; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Mr. Alves leaves behind his children, Sharon Raiche and her husband, |
8 | David, William "Chuck" Alves and his wife, Diane, the Honorable Stephen Alves and his wife, |
9 | Debra, and Kathryn Vinton and her husband, Stephen. He was the father of the late Donna |
10 | Paliotta, and her husband, Richard, and Sally Jane Rainville and her husband, William "Billy" |
11 | Rainville. He was the proud grandfather of Michael Paliotta and Alicia Proulx, Matthew Raiche |
12 | and Amando Caetano, Jennifer Degraide and David Alves, William and Kaitlyn Alves, Stephen, |
13 | Kyle and Kayla Vinton, Jillian Nesbitt and Bryan Rainville, and the proud great-grandfather of |
14 | Brea, James, Lola, Calley, Jack, Adeline, Nicholas, Harper, Ryan, Zachary, Madden, Amelia, |
15 | Griffin, Paxton, Reilly, Nolan, and Hayes. He also leaves behind his loving companion, Helen |
16 | Kosubinsky, and many nieces and nephews; now, therefore be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
18 | expresses its deepest condolences to the Alves Family on the passing of the Honorable William L. |
19 | "Bud" Alves; and be it further |
20 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
21 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Sharon Raiche, William Alves, the Honorable |
22 | Stephen Alves, and Kathryn Vinton. |
