H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

SUPPORTING THE INSTALLATION OF A "LUSO-AMERICANS VETERANS

MONUMENT" AT THE RHODE ISLAND VETERANS MEMORIAL CEMETERY

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Day of Portugal is seeking to build and install a "Luso-

Americans Veterans Monument" at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery; and

     WHEREAS, "Luso-Americans" is another term for Portuguese Americans, of which

Rhode Island is blessed to have a very large population. The building of this monument would be

an appropriate way of recognizing the many sacrifices "Luso-Americans" have made in service to

our nation by protecting and preserving our precious freedoms, and would demonstrate the pride

Rhode Island and our nation have for Luso-Americans; and

     WHEREAS, The design of the proposed monument will be achieved by asking the

talented Portuguese architect community to design a monument that commands respect and

dignity and speaks to the soul of the Portuguese community’s heritage; and

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Day of Portugal is seeking financial support for the

building and installation of the "Luso-Americans Veterans Monument"; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

supports the building and installation of the "Luso-Americans Veterans Monument" at the Rhode

Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Daniel J. McKee, Governor of

the State of Rhode Island.
