CONGRATULATING THE HONORABLE NICK PERRY ON BEING CONFIRMED AS THE | |
1ST JAMAICAN-BORN PERSON TO BE NAMED AMBASSADOR EXTRAORDINARY | |
AND PLENIPOTENTIARY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO JAMAICA | |

1 | WHEREAS, Recommended by Senate Majority Leader, Charles Schumer, and |
2 | nominated by President Biden, New York State Assemblyman Nick Perry has been confirmed as |
3 | the 1st Jamaican-born person to serve as United States Ambassador to the Caribbean island nation |
4 | of Jamaica; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Nick Perry was born and spent his early years in St. Andrew, Jamaica. He |
6 | immigrated to Brooklyn in 1971, and volunteered for service in the United States Army. Upon his |
7 | honorable discharge, he attained his degree from Brooklyn College; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Shortly after graduating, Mr. Perry began what would become a lifetime of |
9 | service, initially as a community organizer and soon thereafter, he was appointed to the local |
10 | Community Board and subsequently elected to serve as Chair. He served five consecutive terms |
11 | on the Brooklyn Borough; and |
12 | WHEREAS, In 1992, the Honorable Nick Perry was elected as an Assemblyman in the |
13 | New York State Legislature, a position he held for three decades, and during which time he |
14 | served as the assistant Speaker Pro Tempore of the Assembly and was a regional Vice Chairman |
15 | of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators; and |
16 | WHEREAS, In 2018, the Honorable Nick Perry was named the Legislator of the Year by |
17 | the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and has been honored numerous times throughout |
18 | his illustrious career by the New York Civil Liberties Union, the New York State Association of |
19 | Black and Puerto Rican Legislators, and many others; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Through his accomplished career, the Honorable Nick Perry has |
2 | "demonstrated ability to work across diverse communities to build consensus on issues of social |
3 | importance" and possesses a deep "personal understanding of the immigrant experience and the |
4 | promise of America" which have ultimately made him eminently worthy and qualified to serve as |
5 | Ambassador to Jamaica; now, therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
7 | congratulates the Honorable Nick Perry on being named Ambassador Extraordinary and |
8 | Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Jamaica. We wish him the best of health and |
9 | continued success in his new appointment; and be it further |
10 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
11 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the United States Ambassador to Jamaica Nick |
12 | Perry. |
