1 | WHEREAS, In 1793, Samuel Slater started the country's first water-powered cotton- |
2 | spinning mill along the Blackstone River, firmly establishing Rhode Island as a national leader in |
3 | manufacturing; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Today, Rhode Island still remains a manufacturing powerhouse, with 1,758 |
5 | industrial companies employing 65,570 workers, and generating a diverse panoply of products |
6 | including auto parts, jewelry, food and beverage ingredients, and pharmaceuticals; and |
7 | WHEREAS, In addition, Rhode Island's manufacturing, while historically textile based, |
8 | now includes major defense contractors such as Raytheon and Electric Boat, the toy and game |
9 | producer, Hasbro, to numerous biotech companies; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Rhode Island's manufacturing industry is a mix of both large and small |
11 | companies that produce jewelry which is particularly significant, as well as silverware, electrical |
12 | equipment, textiles, transportation equipment, and fabricated materials; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Over 70 percent of Rhode Island's exports are manufactured products; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Providence is Rhode Island’s largest city based on number of industrial |
15 | jobs, followed closely by North Kingstown, Pawtucket, Cranston, and Warwick; and |
16 | WHEREAS, In support of this vital economic sector, Rhode Island has initiated programs |
17 | to prepare students and build a pipeline of skilled workers ready to join the workforce through |
18 | Career & Technical Education programs, which operate at more than 50 high schools, charter |
19 | schools, postsecondary institutions and adult skills training facilities; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The manufacturing industry is a vital component in the economic health of |
2 | Rhode Island and in creating and supporting well-paying, family-sustaining jobs for its citizens; |
3 | now, therefore be it |
4 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
5 | celebrates April 11-18, 2022, as "Manufacturing Week" in the State; and be it further |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
7 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dave Chenevert, Executive Director of Rhode |
8 | Island Manufacturers Association. |
