HONORING DR. TIMOTHY J. BABINEAU ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS | |
PRESIDENT AND CEO OF LIFESPAN | |

1 | WHEREAS, In August of 2012, Dr. Timothy Babineau was named President and CEO of |
2 | Lifespan. He had previously served as President of Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s |
3 | Hospital and The Miriam Hospital; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Under Dr. Babineau’s sagacious leadership, Lifespan became the preferred |
5 | health care system in the State and the region, with the employee base growing by 16 percent and |
6 | the organization’s total assets increasing from $2.4 billion in 2012, to over $2.9 billion in 2022; |
7 | and |
8 | WHEREAS, Dr. Babineau is credited with leading the expansion of ambulatory care |
9 | practices to strategic locations throughout the state in order to decompress the hospital campuses, |
10 | and with helping to build the state’s largest multispecialty physician practice, Lifespan Physician |
11 | Group, which has nearly 1,300 employees; and |
12 | WHEREAS, A true visionary, Dr. Babineau transformed the way care is delivered in the |
13 | State, by leading the successful acquisition of Rhode Island’s premier primary care group Coastal |
14 | Medical. Under his direction, Lifespan redesigned the way care is delivered across the system and |
15 | at hospitals, clinics and community practices, to evolve from a hospital system to a health care |
16 | system that puts the patient at the center of the care journey; and |
17 | WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Babineau was instrumental in creating strategic alliances |
18 | with Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) which have |
19 | created value for patients, Lifespan and their partner organizations. He also recruited numerous |

1 | world-class physicians to lead centers of excellence in myriad medical specialties and |
2 | subspecialties that ultimately resulted in elevating the caliber of care for all patients; and |
3 | WHEREAS, During his tenure, Dr. Babineau focused on clinical excellence, academic |
4 | rigor, and visionary research, while also building a culture of philanthropy including the most |
5 | successful capital campaign in Lifespan’s history, the Every Child, Every Day campaign in |
6 | support of Hasbro Children’s Hospital which raised over $42 million; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Over the past decade, and especially during the months of our State and |
8 | Country's most difficult times with the pandemic, Dr. Babineau has led Lifespan with integrity, |
9 | vision, and courage and thanks to his leadership, Lifespan has risen to new heights and has |
10 | become the pre-eminent health system for the health and well-being of the people of Rhode |
11 | Island; now, therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
13 | recognizes and thanks Doctor Timothy Babineau on the occasion of his retirement after ten years |
14 | of visionary leadership at Lifespan, and wishes him good health, fulfillment and continued |
15 | success in all his future endeavors; and be it further |
16 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
17 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Timothy Babineau. |
