EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF TIA SCIGULINSKY

     WHEREAS, It is with sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Tia

2

Scigulinsky, beloved wife of Kenneth Scigulinsky, mother of Kenneth Scigulinsky and his wife,

3

Christina, Elise Plumb and her husband, Jeffrey, and the doting grandmother of her cherished

4

grandchildren, Jackson and Owen Scigulinsky and Matthew, Joshua, and William Plumb; and

5

     WHEREAS, Tia Scigulinsky was born Grietje Jantina Kenau Nieuwenhuis in

6

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, during the Nazi occupation. As a young girl, she immigrated to

7

Seattle with her family and upon becoming a US citizen, changed her name to Tia; and

8

     WHEREAS, After graduating from Garfield High, Ms. Scigulinsky attended the

9

University of Washington where she earned a Bachelor's degree in History and Education, and

10

met the love of her life and future husband, Ken. Many years later, she returned to academics,

11

earning her Master's degree in Education from Salve Regina University; and

12

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Scigulinsky taught school in numerous States as she traveled the

13

country with her husband who was a naval officer. The couple finally made their permanent

14

home in Portsmouth and she began what would become a twenty-eight year career as a much-

15

admired and respected teacher of European History at Rogers High School in Newport,

16

eventually retiring as Chair of the Social Studies Department; and

17

     WHEREAS, While teaching at Rogers, Mrs. Scigulinsky annually organized student trips

18

to Europe, instilling her students with a love of traveling. Once retired, she continued her

19

European travel by organizing and leading groups of her friends on trips, ultimately visiting over

20

50 countries and acquiring myriad wonderful memories; and

     WHEREAS, Throughout her years teaching and continuing into retirement, Mrs.

2

Scigulinsky was very active with the Teachers Association of Newport (TAN), where she served

3

as President, and as the person to call when one had questions about contractual, work or benefit

4

issues. She also served on the Board of Directors of the RI National Education Association

5

(NEA) and on the national level, was the NEA Chair of Women and Children Issues and attended

6

the United Nations National Commission of Women representing the State organization. Never

7

one to remain idle, after retiring, she remained very active in numerous organizations and had

8

been honored many times for her altruistic endeavors; and

9

     WHEREAS, Tia Scigulinsky was also a consummate hostess, whether cooking in the

10

simple Dutch style or scouring cookbooks for new and interesting recipes, and whether preparing

11

a dinner party for friends or just supper for her husband and family, she always elevated her

12

meals with beautiful settings as well as scrumptious food. In addition, she loved to garden and

13

would present beautiful bouquets to her friends, and loved Classical music and reading; and

14

     WHEREAS, Tia Scigulinsky led a full and wonderful life, blessed with a family who

15

loved her deeply, employment that was fulfilling and rewarding, and friends she adored, and she

16

is dearly missed by them all; now, therefore be it

17

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

18

extends deepest condolences on the passing of Tia Scigulinsky; and be it further

19

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

20

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Kenneth Scigulinsky and Family.
