CONGRATULATING DR. SUSAN GIBBONS ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT | |

1 | WHEREAS, As a young girl, Susan Gibbons began her affection and connection to |
2 | Block Island while visiting her grandparents in the summer months. In 2002, she and her |
3 | husband, Peter, who had met on the island, became full-time residents; and |
4 | WHEREAS, In 2005, after attaining her certification to become a high school teacher, |
5 | Dr. Gibbons became the island's high school resource teacher. After extensive courses, she took |
6 | on the challenge of teaching all the sciences at the high school level including physical science, |
7 | earth science, biology, chemistry, field biology, and human anatomy; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Dr. Gibbons had previously taught in the Physical Therapy program at the |
9 | University of Hartford for eleven years and had earned her PhD in Human Development and |
10 | Family Studies at the University of Connecticut; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Surrounded by the perfect nature setting to teach many of the sciences, Dr. |
12 | Gibbons often used the island's resources and environment to teach and instill her students with |
13 | the value of nature and an understanding of "their roles as stewards of the island environment"; |
14 | and |
15 | WHEREAS, Extraordinary people never retire, they just begin a new chapter of their |
16 | lives. Dr. Gibbons looks forward to spending more time with her husband, friends, and |
17 | granddaughter in Boston, as well as traveling, and training and riding her horses; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Dr. Gibbons has been a paradigm of the very best leadership and teaching |
19 | qualities and the erudite tutelage she has bestowed on her students will be felt for generations; |
20 | now, therefore be it |

1 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
2 | congratulates Dr. Susan Gibbons on her retirement and thanks her for all her efforts on behalf of |
3 | Block Island's children. We moreover wish her good health, fulfillment and much success in all |
4 | her future endeavors; and be it further |
5 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
6 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Susan Gibbons. |
