HONORING REPRESENTATIVE LIANA CASSAR FOR HER SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE | |
OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Honorable Liana Cassar graduated from the University of Connecticut |
2 | with a Bachelor's degree in communications and Spanish. Continuing her education, she earned a |
3 | Master’s degree in public health from Boston University, and an MBA from Simmons College. |
4 | She and her family reside in the Town of Barrington; and |
5 | WHEREAS, In November of 2018, the Honorable Liana Cassar was elected to the Rhode |
6 | Island House of Representatives from District 66, which encompasses neighborhoods in the |
7 | Town of Barrington and East Providence. She is a member of the House Health and Human |
8 | Services Committee, and the House Small Business Committee; and |
9 | WHEREAS, As a tireless advocate for her constituency, Representative Cassar has |
10 | championed legislation to establish a pilot program that leverages federal dollars to address |
11 | chronic homelessness, and the enactment of a new law to make perinatal doula services eligible |
12 | for reimbursement through private insurance which helps to address racial disparities in health |
13 | outcomes for parents and infants; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Outspoken on many causes, Representative Cassar introduced legislation to |
15 | create the Utilization Review Act that augments healthcare affordability initiatives, and has |
16 | sponsored bills to expand Rhode Island’s successful paid family leave program and codify the |
17 | protections of the Affordable Care Act in State law. She has also been the House sponsor of the |
18 | Equality in Abortion Coverage Act, that codifies Rhode Islanders rights under the Reproductive |
19 | Privacy Act, regardless of a person’s health insurance; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In addition to her long hours at the State House, Representative Cassar has |
2 | worked in the healthcare IT sector, and had served in the Peace Corps as a community |
3 | development worker in Costa Rica. Currently, she runs a strategy and operations consulting |
4 | business, serves as a coach for the business incubator program at Social Enterprise Greenhouse, |
5 | has served as co-chair of the Barrington Democratic Town Committee and is an advisory board |
6 | member for the Center for Health and Justice Transformation; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Over the past four years, the Honorable Liana Cassar has served her |
8 | constituents and the citizens of Rhode Island with distinction and integrity. She has touched the |
9 | lives of so many families through her diligent efforts and with the legislation she has fought to |
10 | enact, and she is eminently worthy of our gratitude and acknowledgement; now, therefore be it |
11 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
12 | honors Representative Liana Cassar as she concludes her service in the Rhode Island General |
13 | Assembly. We thank her for a job well done, and extend our sincere wishes for her continued |
14 | health, happiness, and success; and be it further |
15 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
16 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Liana Cassar. |
