EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY ON THE PASSING OF MARIE E. PAIVA

     WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Marie E.

2

Paiva, the wife of Arthur Joseph Paiva, and the beloved mother of Joe Paiva and his wife, Lauren,

3

John Paiva and his wife, Jacqueline Mercer, and our dear friend and former President of the

4

Rhode Island Senate, the Honorable Marie Teresa Paiva-Weed and the late Mark Weed; and

5

     WHEREAS, Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on January 18, 1936, Mrs. Paiva was the

6

daughter of the late Charles Henry and Isabel Stricker, and the sister of the late Ruth Kirk, Edith

7

Stricker, Ed Stricker, Leona Gerbes, Mason Stricker, Joseph Stricker, and John Stricker; and

8

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Paiva served our country with honor in the United States Air Force

9

from 1958 to 1959. In 1976, she graduated from Salve Regina College and later attained her

10

Master's degree in Business also from Salve Regina. For twenty-five years, she had been

11

employed as a Public Housing Manager for the Newport Housing Authority; and

12

     WHEREAS, A devoted communicant of the Church of Jesus Saviour, Mrs. Paiva had

13

sung in the church choir for forty years. She was also active in the community as a member of the

14

Newport Elks and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Portsmouth Senior Center and its Chorus,

15

and on the Board of Directors of the Edward King House, and was the first woman President of

16

the Newport Pop Warner Football; and

17

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Paiva created a warm and welcoming home for her family and friends

18

as well unconditional love and support for those she cherished, especially her grandchildren, Jake

19

Paiva, Joshua Paiva and his wife, Jenna Lenskold, and Lily Mercer-Paiva; and

20

     WHEREAS, There is no doubt that Marie Paiva, a gracious and gifted woman, left an

indelible mark on the lives of those she knew and loved, and she will be dearly missed; now,

2

therefore be it

3

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

4

extends deepest condolences on the passing of Marie E. Paiva; and be it further

5

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

6

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Joe Paiva and Family, John Paiva and Family,

7

and the Honorable Marie Teresa Paiva-Weed and Family.
