H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING REPRESENTATIVE JEAN PHILIPPE BARROS FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE

PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, It is with sadness that this House bids farewell to our good friend and

2

colleague, the Honorable Jean Philippe Barros, after eight years of devoted public service to his

3

constituents and the citizens of the State of Rhode Island in the Rhode Island House of

4

Representatives; and

5

     WHEREAS, To the immense good fortune of the people of Pawtucket, the Honorable

6

Jean Philippe Barros chose a life path that would eventually lead to a vocation in public service.

7

From 2007 through 2010, he served on the Pawtucket Juvenile Hearing Board, was a member of

8

the Pawtucket Charter Review Commission, and served on the Pawtucket City Council for six

9

years representing the people of District 5; and

10

     WHEREAS, In November of 2014, the people of District 59 elected the Honorable Jean

11

Philippe Barros to the Rhode Island House of Representatives. Earning the respect of his

12

colleagues, he was named Deputy Majority Leader in 2017. In addition, he has served as First

13

Vice Chairman of the House Education Committee, a member of the House Finance Committee,

14

where he chaired the Committee’s Public Safety Subcommittee, and was a member of the House

15

Municipal Government Committee, and the Housing Committee; and

16

     WHEREAS, During his tenure in the House, Representative Barros has championed

17

numerous initiatives and legislative bills including a Resolution requesting Rhode Island’s

18

municipalities to create five-member commissions to oversee the distribution of incoming federal

19

COVID-19 funds, a bill to establish a tax on sugary drinks, and an Act to establish the Student

Cloud Computing Privacy and Protection Act. In addition, he sponsored legislation to assist local

2

brewers by allowing a manufacturer's license holder to authorize the sale of beverages for

3

consumption on premises, and was a co-sponsor of the 2019 passage of the Reproductive Privacy

4

Act; and

5

     WHEREAS, Representative Barros currently serves as the Deputy Director of Public

6

Works and Code Enforcement for the people and the City of Central Falls and is the proud father

7

of two sons, Tyger Lee Barros and Zachary Robert Barros; and

8

     WHEREAS, Throughout his years in the General Assembly, Representative Barros has

9

developed deep and abiding friendships with members from all political persuasions which has

10

truly earned him the profound respect and gratitude of his colleagues, and the people of the City

11

of Pawtucket and the State of Rhode Island; now, therefore be it

12

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

13

joins the family and many friends of Representative Barros in recognizing and celebrating his

14

devoted career of service to the Rhode Island House of Representatives. We, moreover, wish him

15

continued success, happiness and fulfillment in all his future endeavors; and be it further

16

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

17

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Jean Philippe Barros.
