H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING AND THANKING REPRESENTATIVE JAMES N. MCLAUGHLIN FOR HIS

SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, To the good fortune of the people of Cumberland and Central Falls, the

Honorable James N. McLaughlin was elected to represent District 57 in the Rhode Island House

of Representatives in November of 2010; and

     WHEREAS, During his tenure in the House, Representative McLaughlin served in

myriad capacities including first Vice-Chair of the House Health and Human Services

Committee, second Vice-Chair of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and as a member of

the House Environment and Natural Resources Committee, and Co-Chair of the Joint

Commission on Defense Economy Planning; and

     WHEREAS, An avid supporter of his constituency, Representative McLaughlin

successfully coordinated and achieved the repairs and repaving of Marshall Avenue in

Cumberland, and the repairs and repaving of 35.8 miles of roads in Cumberland, through

extensive meetings with the Department of Transportation; and

     WHEREAS, Representative McLaughlin has supported and sponsored myriad legislation

including new laws to toughen penalties for gang-related crime and programs to help Rhode

Islanders find and return to work. He also served our country with honor in the United States

Army and is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His military experience gave him a

unique understanding of the needs of our State’s veterans and to honor all five branches of the

military, he annually led the “Leap for Vets” event to raise money for the Rhode Island Military

Relief Fund; and

     WHEREAS, In addition, Representative McLaughlin has sponsored legislation to

increase the cost-efficiency of our State’s school bus transportation plans, including legislation

allowing school districts to maintain an annual registry for students requiring bus transportation

to school; and

     WHEREAS, Also active in his community, Representative McLaughlin is a member of

the South Attleboro Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Fatima Holy Name Society and the St.

Thomas Council. He is the devoted husband of Gilda Rose McLaughlin and together they have

three children; and

     WHEREAS, Representative McLaughlin’s tireless devotion to the citizens of the Ocean

State have earned him our admiration, and he will most assuredly be missed; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

joins the family and many friends of the Honorable James McLaughlin in honoring his service to

the people of Rhode Island and wishing him good health, happiness and fulfillment in his future

endeavors; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable James McLaughlin.
