CONGRATULATING CLASSICAL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE AND BASEBALL STAR

JEREMY PEÑA ON BEING NAMED THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER OF THE 2022

WORLD SERIES

     WHEREAS, Jeremy Peña, a proud Classical High School graduate and former baseball

2

star at the University of Maine, made all Rhode Islanders proud when he led the Houston Astros

3

to victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series, becoming only the third rookie

4

player in baseball history to be named World Series Most Valuable Player; and

5

     WHEREAS, As a rookie shortstop with the Astros, Jeremy had an outstanding season in

6

2022, hitting 22 home runs, and becoming the first rookie in Major League Baseball history to

7

win the Gold Glove Award for outstanding fielding at the position of shortstop. Thanks in part to

8

his powerful bat and stellar fielding at the shortstop position, the Astros compiled the best regular

9

season record in baseball winning an astounding 106 games; and

10

     WHEREAS, Jeremy’s outstanding play continued in the playoffs. In the first round, he

11

hit a home run helping to the lead the Astros to a sweep of the Seattle Mariners. In the

12

Championship Series, Jeremy became a star on the national scene, earning the American League

13

Championship MVP Award while leading the Astros to a sweep of the New York Yankees by

14

smashing two home runs, batting .353, and wowing observers with his smooth fielding and

15

extensive defensive range at the shortstop position; and

16

     WHEREAS, In the World Series, Jeremy’s stellar play and hot bat continued as he batted

17

.400, with ten hits, and cracking another home run to lead the Astros to a 4-2 World Series

18

victory over the Phillies; and

19

     WHEREAS, Jeremy Peña is living proof that hard work, perseverance, and strong

character will lead to positive outcomes in life. His heroics on the biggest stage in baseball have

2

made all Rhode Islanders proud and he is serving as a positive role model for all youngsters in

3

Providence and across the State of Rhode Island; now, therefore be it

4

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

5

expresses its deepest congratulations to Jeremy Peña on winning the World Series Most Valuable

6

Player Award, and wishes him continued success in all future endeavors on and off the baseball

7

diamond; and be it further

8

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

9

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Jeremy Peña.
