EXTENDING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF DR. DANIEL SMITH | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Dr. Daniel |
2 | Smith Harrop, III, the beloved partner of Jeffrey Harrington, and a Republican activist and |
3 | renowned leader on myriad State issues; and |
4 | WHEREAS, A West Warwick native, Dan Harrop was a son of the late Dr. Daniel Smith |
5 | Jr. and Dorothy Harrop, and the brother of Keven Harrop and his wife, Karen, Deborah Harrop, |
6 | Susan James and her husband, David, and Dr. Pamela Harrop. In addition, he leaves his best |
7 | friend and cousin Maureen Harrop, his beloved dog, Fozzie and numerous nieces, nephews, |
8 | grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Harrop was a graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School, Brown |
10 | University, and the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. Later in life, he also |
11 | received a Master's degree from the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University in |
12 | Scotland; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Upon graduation from medical school, Mr. Harrop made his home in |
14 | Providence and worked as a practicing psychiatrist, and had also been an administrator at |
15 | hospitals in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and held faculty positions at Harvard and Brown; |
16 | and |
17 | WHEREAS, A man of great faith, Mr. Harrop was a generous benefactor of the Catholic |
18 | Church, a long time trustee for St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church Parish, and a Trustee of the |
19 | Catholic Foundation. He was also a founder and supporter of many conservative causes including |

1 | founding Chairman of The Rhode Island Center for Freedom & Prosperity; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Mr. Harrop was very active in with numerous organizations, serving as |
3 | President of the Bishop Hendricken High School Alumni Board, Chairman of the Board of |
4 | Advisors, Development and Annual Fund Committees. For his outstanding commitment and |
5 | contributions to the school, he was inducted into the Bishop Hendricken Hall of Fame. He was |
6 | also active in the Brown University Alumni Association, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Brown Club of |
7 | Rhode Island, Faculty Club of Brown University, Masons, MENSA, International Order of Odd |
8 | Fellows, Past President of Sons of the American Revolution, Surgeon for the Society of Colonial |
9 | Wars, Board Member of the Sons of the Revolution, Past Grand Knight of the Knights of |
10 | Columbus (Fatima Council), Past President of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Sons of the |
11 | Union Veterans of the Civil War, National Society of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, |
12 | Trustee of Nathaniel Greene Homestead, The Ocean State Policy Research Institute, The |
13 | Roosevelt Society, St. Thomas Becket Association, McVinney Foundation, Serra Club of |
14 | Providence and Mother Of Life Center, and a Knight Commander with Star of the Equestrian |
15 | Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Active in State and City politics, Mr. Harrop was a member of the Rhode |
17 | Island Republican Party, where he had formerly served as finance chairman, and the Providence |
18 | Republican City Committee. He had unsuccessfully sought the Providence Mayoral office three |
19 | times, and ran for State Representative in the General Assembly; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Dan Harrop led a full and meaningful life. In addition to his family, work, |
21 | and politics, he loved to travel, and enjoyed a good meal, a good laugh, a good story, and history, |
22 | as well as watching the ferries and listening to the waves crash on the shore at the Galilee Beach |
23 | Club. He was a mentor and loyal friend to many and lit up a room with his omnipresent |
24 | generosity and good humor, and he will be dearly missed; now, therefore be it |
25 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
26 | extends deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Daniel Smith Harrop III; and be it further |
27 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
28 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Jeffrey Harrington. |
