RELATING TO ELECTIONS -- ELECTIVE MEETINGS | |

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Section 17-18-15 of the General Laws in Chapter 17-18 entitled "Elective |
2 | Meetings" is hereby amended to read as follows: |
3 | 17-18-15. Closing of schools. |
4 | At each general election as defined in § 17-1-2(2) and, at each statewide primary as defined |
5 | in § 17-15-1, and at each primary for election of delegates to national conventions and for |
6 | presidential preference as defined in § 17-12.1, all public elementary and secondary schools |
7 | throughout the state shall not be in session. On the day of the general election, and the statewide |
8 | primary, and the presidential preference primary, the use of school buildings or premises shall be |
9 | restricted to use only as polling places for election purposes. Notwithstanding the previous |
10 | provisions, school staff development days may be held. Provided further, that the provisions of this |
11 | section shall not be applicable to the Block Island School, located in the town of New Shoreham, |
12 | and the use of the Block Island School shall not be restricted, nor shall classes need to be cancelled |
13 | or postponed at said school, on the day of general elections, and statewide primaries, and |
14 | presidential preference primaries. |
15 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
