RELATING TO MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES -- RIDESHARE VEHICLE SURCHARGE | |

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Title 31 of the General Laws entitled "MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES" |
2 | is hereby amended by adding thereto the following chapter: |
3 | CHAPTER 34.2 |
4 | RIDESHARE VEHICLE SURCHARGE |
5 | 31-34.2-1. Rideshare vehicle surcharge. |
6 | (a) Each rideshare company shall collect a surcharge which shall be added to the fare |
7 | charged to each customer. |
8 | (b) The surcharge shall be seventy-five cents ($0.75) per fare. |
9 | (c) The total amount of surcharge collections shall be remitted to the State of Rhode Island, |
10 | and fifty percent (50%) of the surcharge collections shall be deposited in a restricted account to be |
11 | used for street infrastructure improvements in the municipality where the fare originated, and fifty |
12 | percent (50%) of the surcharge collections shall be deposited in a restricted account to be used as |
13 | funding for implementation of Transit Forward RI as adopted by the state planning council. |
14 | (d) The tax administrator shall promulgate rules and regulations necessary to implement |
15 | the provisions of this chapter. |
16 | (e) All disbursements and expenditures of funds from the restricted accounts subject to the |
17 | provisions of this section shall be by appropriation of the general assembly. |

1 | This act would implement a seventy-five cent ($0.75) surcharge on fares charged by |
2 | rideshare companies. This act would also require that fifty percent (50%) of the surcharges be |
3 | deposited in a restricted account to be used for street improvements in the municipality where the |
4 | fare originated, and fifty percent (50%) of the surcharges be deposited in a restricted account to |
5 | fund Transit Forward RI. |
6 | This act would take effect upon passage. |
