J O I N T   R E S O L U T I O N

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION OF $2,000,000 TO THE RHODE ISLAND FOOD BANK

     WHEREAS, In January of 2023, the Rhode Island Department of Human Services

announced that the Federal Government was ending the COVID-19 SNAP (Supplemental

Nutrition Assistance Program) Emergency benefit payments; and

     WHEREAS, As of March of 2023, thousands of SNAP households in Rhode Island, who

rely on these benefits to put food on the table each month, especially now during one of the

highest periods of inflation in the past decade, will only receive their regular monthly SNAP

issuance; and

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Community Food Bank and its network of 155-member

agencies provides food to people who are in need every day, and as SNAP benefits decrease, the

need for the Food Bank’s assistance will most assuredly increase; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That there is hereby appropriated, out of any money in the treasury not

otherwise appropriated for the fiscal year 2023-2024, the sum of two million dollars ($2,000,000)

to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank; and the state controller is hereby authorized and

directed to draw his orders upon the general treasurer for the payment of said sum, or so much

thereof as may be from time to time required, upon receipt of properly authenticated vouchers.
