RELATING TO EDUCATION -- COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Section 16-33.1-3 of the General Laws in Chapter 16-33.1 entitled |
2 | "Community College of Rhode Island [See Title 16 Chapter 97 — The Rhode Island Board of |
3 | Education Act]" is hereby amended to read as follows: |
4 | 16-33.1-3. Award of degrees — Curriculum and government Award of degrees -- |
5 | Curriculum, governance, and government. |
6 | (a) The board of governors education, with the approval of the president and a committee |
7 | of the faculty of the community college the faculty senate of the community college of Rhode |
8 | Island, shall award associate degrees, certificates, and diplomas and confer honors in the same |
9 | manner as is customary in American junior colleges and community colleges. It shall also be the |
10 | duty of the president and a committee of the faculty the faculty senate of the community college of |
11 | Rhode Island, with the approval of the board of governors education, to arrange courses of study, |
12 | prescribe any qualifications for the admission of students and any rules of study, exercise, |
13 | discipline, and government as the president and committee may deem proper. |
14 | (b) With the concurrence of the president, the faculty senate of the community college of |
15 | Rhode Island has the authority to formulate policy concerning teaching and research, study, |
16 | exercise, discipline, governance, and government, including, but not limited to: |
17 | (1) Academic standards, which includes scholastic standing, admission, dismissal policies, |
18 | class attendance, and grading systems; |
19 | (2) The community college’s calendar; |

1 | (3) Community college-wide curriculum matters and research and patent policy as they |
2 | may affect the faculty as a whole. |
3 | (c) All policies established by the faculty senate of the community college of Rhode Island |
4 | (the “college”) shall be made with recognition of and to support the varied student body of the |
5 | college, and shall seek to advance the mission of the college in servicing that student body. |
6 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |

1 | This act would provide that degrees, certificates, and diplomas from the community college |
2 | of Rhode Island would be awarded by the board of education, with the approval of the president |
3 | and the faculty senate of the community college of Rhode Island. This act would also clarify that |
4 | the faculty senate of the community college of Rhode Island would have authority to formulate |
5 | policy on teaching and research. |
6 | This act would take effect upon passage. |
