RHODE ISLAND DIVISION IV GIRLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Introduced By: Representatives Giraldo, Voas, Alzate, Shekarchi, Blazejewski,

     Date Introduced: March 28, 2023

Referred To: House read and passed

1

WHEREAS, The Central Falls Girls Basketball Team compiled one of the greatest

2

seasons in Rhode Island Girls Basketball history. The Lady Warriors dominated the Division IV

3

regular season finishing divisional play undefeated with a perfect record of 14-0; and

4

WHEREAS, The Lady warriors entered the State Tournament seeded first and after

5

receiving a first-round bye, they played Providence Country Day in the semi-finals at North

6

Providence High School. Playing practically a perfect game and arguably their best game of the

7

season, Central Falls thrashed Providence Country Day by the score of 60-19 to advance to the

8

Championship Game; and

9

WHEREAS, In the Title game, Central Falls faced off against rival and second place

10

finisher Davies Career & Tech, at the Rhode Island College Murray Center. It is often said that

11

you find out if a great team has a championship heart when they face adversity and the Central

12

Falls squad faced it for the first time, when they found themselves behind in the second half for

13

the first time all season; and

14

WHEREAS, With their backs against the wall, the Lady Warriors showed their

15

championship hearts as they stared down the pressure and went off on an 11-2 scoring run to lock

16

up the title by the score of 46-35; and

17

WHEREAS, Winning a State Championship in a team sport is a very difficult endeavor,

18

one that can only be achieved if every team member gives their all and puts team needs ahead of

19

all personal goals. The Central Falls Girls Basketball Team had those important qualities in

1

abundance as they were led all season by the outstanding play provided by Jumella Thorton,

2

Joana Rodrigues Andrade, Neyi Fernandez, Maribel Veiga, Ariana Ruiz Lopez, Pamela Galva,

3

Jayda Palin Argueta, Lamiyah Williams, Alexsya Torres, Nathayah Andrade, Melanie Coll,

4

Kamila Pizarro Pinto, Raissa Cardosa De Graca, and Jaeda Simmons. The Central Falls Lady

5

Warriors also benefitted greatly all season from the superb coaching and leadership that was

6

provided by Head Coach Nick Lafreniere and Assistant Coach Manny Silva; now, therefore be it

7

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

8

heartily congratulates the Central Falls Girls Basketball Team on winning the Rhode Island

9

Division IV Girls Basketball Championship; and be it further

10

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

11

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Nick Lafreniere, Head Basketball Coach,

12

Central Falls Girls Basketball.
