RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF | |
BEACON CHARTER SCHOOLS IN 2003 | |

1 | WHEREAS, Beacon Charter Schools were founded in 2003 with the purpose of |
2 | providing students from across Rhode Island with an arts-focused educational experience. |
3 | Beacon's mission is to "develop artistic thinkers by nurturing self-expression while preparing our |
4 | graduates with the academic skills necessary for sustained post-secondary success"; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Beacon students learn about the theatre, visual, and culinary arts. In the |
6 | theatre arts program, they are provided with enriching and engaging opportunities to learn about |
7 | all elements of the theatre, both on stage and off stage. They also explore the literature, history, |
8 | cultural significance, and theories behind theatre and its great works; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In the Beacon visual arts program, students explore the different forms of |
10 | media, and collaborate on projects in which critical thinking, creativity and communication are |
11 | key to success. All of these skills drive innovation in society and mastering them is an important |
12 | expertise to have in order to successfully navigate the professional world of today and tomorrow; |
13 | and |
14 | WHEREAS, The culinary arts program at Beacon offers a comprehensive curriculum and |
15 | training program to prepare its students for all aspects of the food industry from quantity food |
16 | preparation to the art of making fine pastry. In the school’s shop, all classical and modern |
17 | cooking and food preparation techniques are taught with topics covering American regional and a |
18 | variety of international cuisines. Students also learn about the retail and wholesale marketing of |
19 | prepared foods, and are trained to operate all modern kitchen equipment found in commercial |

2 | WHEREAS, Since 2003, the many dedicated teachers, staff members and administrators |
3 | at Beacon Charter Schools have prepared hundreds of students from throughout the State of |
4 | Rhode Island with the necessary academic, artistic and technical skills to thrive as they navigate |
5 | their postsecondary lives; now, therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
7 | recognizes and celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the founding of Beacon Charter Schools in |
8 | 2003; and be it further |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
10 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Michael Skeldon, Superintendent, Beacon |
11 | Charter Schools. |
