H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING SHERRY POCKNETT ON EARNING THE COVETED HONOR OF

ATTAINING THE JAMES BEARD "BEST CHEF NORTHEAST" AWARD

     WHEREAS, The James Beard Awards are considered the "culinary world's Oscars".

Awardees are the cream of the crop and the best of the best, and this year that list includes Sherry

Pocknett, owner and chef extraordinaire at the Sly Fox Den Too in Charlestown; and

     WHEREAS, James Beard was a legendary chef, cookbook author, and television

personality, and the awards given in his name have become coveted accolades that can define an

individual or restaurant's legacy; and

     WHEREAS, Sherry Pocknett is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and is the

first Indigenous female chef winner of a James Beard Award. Her restaurant, the Sly Fox Den

Too, opened in 2021, and is named after her father, Chief Sly Fox; and

     WHEREAS, Sly Fox Den Too is a unique culinary experience featuring local Native

American cuisine from corn cakes made with ground yellow cornmeal and dried cranberries to

quahog chowder, and guaranteed to make a repeat visit inevitable; and

     WHEREAS, Chef Pocknett grew up with a love for nature's seasonal bounties, whether it

was eels, duck, herring, fiddlehead ferns, or scallops, there would always be a special recipe to

tantalize the taste buds; and

     WHEREAS, As her father had taught her, Chef Pocknett is teaching her daughters, Jade

Pocknett-Galvin and Cheyenne Pocknett-Galvin to continue the family tradition and build and

expand on her dreams and success in creating unforgettable culinary experiences for their very

fortunate patrons; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

congratulates Sherry Pocknett on earning the prestigious James Beard "Best Chef Northeast"

Award. We furthermore extend best wishes for a full house and continued success; and be it

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Chef Sherry Pocknett.
