S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING SENATOR MICHAEL J. MCCAFFREY FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE

OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, On September 13, 1994, in the Democratic Primary, and once again on

November 8, 1994, in the General election, the Honorable Michael J. McCaffrey received the

confidence of his constituents and was elected to the Rhode Island State Senate, representing

portions of the City of Warwick in former District 16, which is now District 29. He has since

been re-elected thirteen times, diligently serving the people of this State for almost three decades;

and

     WHEREAS, Michael McCaffrey graduated from Bishop Hendricken High School and

earned his Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Providence College followed by his Juris Doctor

from Suffolk University Law School. He is the husband of Deirdre McCaffrey and the father of

Michael, Cailin, Brenna, and Dierdre; and

     WHEREAS, Senator McCaffrey’s astute legal erudition earned him the Chair of Senate

Judiciary from 2003 until 2017, at which time he was elected by his fellow Senators to the

position of Majority Leader on March 23, 2017; and

     WHEREAS, As the Senate Majority Leader, the Honorable Michael McCaffrey is an Ex

Officio Member of all standing committees of the Senate. In addition, he has championed

numerous initiatives and legislation including enacting court reform measures, diversifying the

judiciary, and most recently, propelling the most progressive cannabis regulation system in the

country through the legislative process to final enactment; and

     WHEREAS, In addition to his family and innumerable hours spent at the State House,

Senator McCaffrey is a successful practicing attorney. He maintains a private legal practice in

Warwick with his brother, James, and is a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association. He also

previously served as a Grand Knight for the Warwick Knights of Columbus; and

     WHEREAS, Senator McCaffrey serves as a model of dedicated and conscientious civic

service, and has earned the respect and the gratitude of the citizens in his community and the

people of this State for making Rhode Island a better place to live and grow; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby honors Senator

Michael McCaffrey for his service to the people of this State and wishes him good health,

fulfillment, and continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Michael J. McCaffrey.
