S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING MARCH OF 2023 AS “NATIONAL READING

MONTH” IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

Ciccone, Sosnowski, DiMario, and Lawson

     WHEREAS, The National Education Association launched "Read Across America" in

2

1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading; and

3

     WHEREAS, In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2nd is designated as “Read Across

4

America Day” in the United States. This also commences "Read Across America Week" and the

5

month of March as "National Reading Month"; and

6

     WHEREAS, Numerous efforts and events are organized during this time to inspire love

7

of reading among children and to motivate Americans of all ages to read every day; and

8

     WHEREAS, Community and parental involvement is vital, as research shows that

9

children who read regularly, especially with adults, have greater success in school; and

10

     WHEREAS. Reading is essential to everyday life, both inside and outside of the

11

classroom and has innumerable benefits including increasing vocabulary and comprehension

12

skills, stimulating brain activity and improving memory, and reducing stress; and

13

     WHEREAS, Reading is a fundamental cornerstone to individual freedom and

14

empowerment, and sharing the power and joy of reading promotes a community of literacy,

15

knowledge and empathy; now, therefore be it

16

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby recognizes and

17

celebrates March of 2023 as “National Reading Month”; and be it further

18

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

19

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Becky Pringle, President of the National
