S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

THANKING BASKETBALL STAR, VERONICA DAWSON, FOR HOSTING A

BASKETBALL CLINIC FOR PAWTUCKET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YOUNGSTERS

     WHEREAS, Veronica Dawson is a bright 16 year-old student, and talented basketball

2

player for the Prep Elite Girls Basketball Team at St. Andrews. She is ranked in the New England

3

top 40, is sixth at her position in the Prep Girls New England Ranking, and has already received

4

her first college basketball scholarship offer from Colby College. She also played for the Boston-

5

based, New Balance sponsored AAU Travel Basketball Team, the MCW Starz. In addition to her

6

many talents, she is very active in her community; and

7

     WHEREAS, On December 17, 2022, Ms. Dawson hosted a one-day clinic for a few

8

dozen students at the Winters Elementary School in Pawtucket. At the clinic, she explained and

9

exhibited the basketball fundamentals of ball handling and shooting, and told them her life story

10

in the hope that they will aspire to achieve all of the dreams that matter to them; and

11

     WHEREAS, Ms. Dawson hosted this clinic with a few of her fellow teammates and her

12

prep coach, Christina Batastini, who described Veronica Dawson as being the “embodiment of a

13

student athlete, driven and dedicated on and off the court.” Coach Batastini went on to say about

14

Veronica Dawson that she “has a high emotional IQ, acting as a leader among her peers, and has

15

observed Dawson’s strong connection to the community in Pawtucket where she was raised”; and

16

     WHEREAS, Ms. Dawson is an outstanding student-athlete who is motivated to keep up

17

her grades in the hope that she can attend and play basketball at an Ivy-League School. She has a

18

stellar 4.12 grade-point-average, is a Vice-President of the National Honor Society, and is a

19

member of the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Committee (DEI); now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby thanks Veronica

2

Dawson for dedicating so much of her free time to host a clinic for youngsters at the Winters

3

Elementary School in Pawtucket. We furthermore wish her continued success in all her future

4

endeavors; and be it further

5

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

6

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Veronica Dawson.
