INVOCATION

REV. DR. GEORGE E. ECONOMOY
ASSUMPTION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH
PAWTUCKET

Let us bow our heads in prayer. It was 179 years ago, 0 Lord, when the people of Hellas having endured the slavery under the oppression of the Ottoman Empire for four and one half centuries where not paying the head tax imposed by the oppressors meant their heads would be cut off, where their young men were abducted and pressed into service as the infamous Jenisar Armies of the Ottoman Empire, where their most beautiful young girls were taken against their will or their parents consent to the harems of the sultans to become their concubines, where their religious rights and faith in their Lord and saviour Jesus Christ were denied to them and persecuted with impunity.

Not able to endure this any longer decided to take on the struggle for freedom on that historic day of March 26th 1821 - on the Great Feast of the Announceation by the angel to the Virgin that she would conceive in her womb and bring forth the saviour of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ - to read themselves of the oppressor and regain their God given freedom, because you O Lord who holds together the universe in your power and by your divine and almighty will you govern the world, you created from one blood all nations of mankind that inhabit the face of the earth, and assigned to each its boundaries, you conferred your blessings upon the Greek Nation, and kept it free for centuries by your divine grace, you preserved it and saved it, during the four and half centuries of enslavement and restored it once again to a life of freedom. You blessed its struggle for independence begun on that historic day of March 26th 1821. All holy father and master, accept our prayers of Thanksgiving at this very hour for the liberation and rebirth of the greek nation and hear us, who fervently pray to you. give rest to the souls of our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who nobly fought for their faith and country and died with glory, or were slain or hanged or perished in captivity, together with the souls of all who have been well pleasing to you from the beginning of time. Make us all worthy of the freedoms we enjoy, preserve us in peace and concord and guide us to every good work that is pleasing to you. Preserve, protect and keep in peace our great nation, the President of these United States, our Governor, the Representatives of our state in this chamber and every authority and power in our state and nation, our armed forces everywhere and all those who protect us, and the people of the Greek Nation. Make us favorable and well disposed towards the values our great nation stands for, justice, freedom and equality for all people.

For you are the prince of peace and the saviour of our souls, and to you we ascribe glory, to the father and to the son and to the holy spirit - one God - now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
