RECOGNIZING THE HONORABLE LEONA A. KELLEY (POSTHUMOUSLY) ON BEING HONORED BY THE RHODE ISLAND FEDERATION OF BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN'S CLUBS


Whereas, The Rhode Island Federation of Business and Professional Women honor women in Rhode Island who have improved, stimulated and encouraged new opportunities for all women, and

Whereas, Leona A. Kelley began her noble career as a social worker after graduating from the University of Rhode Island; next she became a wife by marrying Milton Kelley of South Kingston, and then a mother to her two sons; and

Whereas, In January 1985, Leona A. Kelley took her oath as the first woman Representative from the town of South Kingstown. She devoted the next sixteen years to serving her constituents and all the people of Rhode Island; and

Whereas, Through her many years of encouragement, determination and drive, Leona strove to gain pay equity, affordable childcare and health care for women and families; and

Whereas, Consistently utilizing her combined abilities and strengths, Leona A. Kelley worked tirelessly for the advancement of all women in economic, civil and political pursuits,; and

Whereas, Her strong belief in protecting our environment and the beautification of Rhode Island has produced tangible results for future generations to enjoy; and

Where,as, Leona A. Kelley was truly a noble woman who earned a place in our hearts and in Rhode Island history; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby recognizes Leona A. Kelley (posthumously) on being honored by the Rhode Island Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs on May 18, 19, 20, 2001 as their Woman in Rhode Island History; and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Milton Kelley and the Rhode Island Federation of Business and Professional Women.
