HOUSE RESOLUTION COMMENDING HELEN RATHBUN ON BEING THE RECIPIENT OF THE OAK LAWN GRANGE "COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD"


Whereas, The Oak Lawn Grange is a favorite local meeting hall that provides the community with a way to gather, address common concerns, and enjoy each other's company. The Grange serves an important function in maintaining our families and assisting the neighboring community by initiating charitable pursuits, providing terrific occasions to socialize and wonderful opportunities to feel like you're a part of a large and caring family; and

Whereas, Community service has always been central to the Oak Lawn Grange's purpose and mission. To be honored with the "Community Service Award" from this organization is truly a significant achievement and Helen Rathbun is a genuinely deserving recipient; and

Whereas, Helen Rathbun began her involvement with the Oak Lawn Grange 70 years ago. Over the years she has served as Past Master, held various other offices with the Grange, and organized the creation of a memorial to Grange members at the Oak Lawn Grange Memorial Park; and

Whereas, Devotion to the community has been an integral part of Helen's life. Her myriad of contributions and accomplishments include: being the Chair of the Oak Lawn Community Baptist Church May Breakfast Committee; being actively involved in fundraising in order to help build the new Oak Lawn Community Baptist Church; spearheading the Oak Lawn Minstrel and Dance shows in order to raise funding for community programs and services; helping to create community floats for parades and patriotic events that pay tribute to the Armed Forces; organizing a neighborhood polio clinic at the Oak Lawn Grange Hall in 1958; and coordinating a food, clothing and money drive for neighborhood fire victims; and

Whereas, Inspired by a deep love for music, Helen is a patron of the Felix Fox Music Club, a lifetime member of the American Guild of Organists, and has inspired the congregations of several local churches where she has served as organist; and

Whereas,Helen remains incredibly and inspiringly active with many community organizations. She serves as an advisor with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program Committee at the Cranston Senior Services Center, has been a charter member of the Pawtuxet Valley Assembly of Rainbow Girls since 1933, has been a Cranston City employee, is President of the Cranston Municipal Retirees Association, and is the Founder and President of the Rathbun Family Association of Rhode Island & Vicinity; and

Whereas,Helen has always displayed those qualities and characteristics that are truly noble, admirable and exemplary. Through a lifetime of compassion, perseverance and good deeds, she is truly deserving of our gratitude and commendations; now, therefore be it

Resolved, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby honors Helen Rathbun for dedicating such a significant portion of her life to the service of others. We congratulate her on being the recipient of the prestigious Oak Lawn Grange "Community Service Award" and wish for her continued health, happiness and success in all her future endeavors; and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Helen Rathbun.
