Legislative Black and Latino Caucus re-elects Williams as chairwoman
STATE HOUSE – Members of the Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus re-elected Rep. Anastasia C. Williams (D – Dist. 9, Providence) to the position of chairwoman yesterday at its first meeting of 2013.
“I’m humbled that my colleagues in the caucus have elected me as their leader for another term,” Representative Williams said. “Our battles are never-ending, and I look forward to leading the fight for better education, jobs, health care, housing and other important issues that plague our communities. We are refreshed and ready to dedicate another session to improving the quality of life for all Rhode Islanders through our legislative efforts.”
The caucus advocates for the interests of disadvantaged people across the state. It seeks to increase a diverse participation and representation in all levels of government in its quest to eliminate disparities that still exist between white and non-white Americans. The eight-member body, which includes Speaker of the House Gordon D. Fox, also elected the following:
• Rep. Grace Diaz (D – Dist. 11, Providence), vice chairwoman; • Sen. Harold M. Metts (D – Dist. 6, Providence), secretary/chaplain; • Rep. Marvin L. Abney (D – Dist. 73, Newport, Middletown), treasurer.
The remaining members are Rep. Joseph S. Almeida (D – Dist. 12, Providence), Sen. Juan M. Pichardo (D – Dist. 2, Providence) and Rep. Raymond A. Hull (D – Dist. 6, Providence, North Providence).
