RELATING TO HEALTH AND SAFETY -- BLINDNESS

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

SECTION 1. Chapter 40-9 of the General Laws entitled "Services for People who are Blind or Visually Impaired" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

40-9-18. Blindness prevention. -- (a) The department of human services shall, in consultation with the Governor's Advisory Council for the blind and Saving Sight Rhode Island, establish a blindness prevention program for children of the state of Rhode Island to promote the screening, testing, diagnosis, and treatment of blindness diseases of the eye and other sight disorders.

(b) The department of human services shall promulgate such rules and regulations in order to effectuate the purposes of this section.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
