H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING JANUARY 14, 2004 TO BE "COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE

ISLAND ALUMNI DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Carter, McHugh, Flaherty, Aubin, and Moran

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island Junior College was dubbed “the miracle on Promenade Street”

when it first opened its doors in 1964. In order to better reflect their broad mission of public

higher education, the college changed their name to the Community College of Rhode Island on

June 26, 1980; and

     WHEREAS, Since their first commencement in June of 1966, CCRI has awarded more

than 48,000 Associate Degrees and certificates; and

     WHEREAS, The phenomenal growth of CCRI is illustrated by the difference in the size

of the first graduating class of 1966 that consisted of 176 students, and the most recent graduating

class of 1300 men and women who graduated in 2003; and

     WHEREAS, The Community College of Rhode Island has become the gateway of

opportunity for Rhode Islanders who wish to pursue higher education; and

     WHEREAS, More than 96% of the graduating class of 2002 are either employed,

continuing their education full-time, or both; and

     WHEREAS, Over 92% of the college’s alumni continue to make Rhode Island their

home. These esteemed alumni include hundreds of successful and prominent business persons,

educators, government and community leaders, and human service professionals who make

significant contributions to the economic and social welfare of Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Community College of Rhode

Island; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby proclaims January 14, 2004 to be “Community College of Rhode

Island Alumni Day” in the State of Rhode Island. We support and recognize the significant

contributions provided to the citizens, families and communities of Rhode Island by this

outstanding educational facility and congratulate the college and its alumni on their 40th

Anniversary; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Alumni Association of the Community

College of Rhode Island.
