S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N

RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF

AMERICA TO ORDER THE PENTAGON TO ISSUE CAMPAIGN-SPECIFIC MEDALS FOR OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM AND THE CAMPAIGN IN AFGHANISTAN

     WHEREAS, The United States Government has a long tradition of awarding campaign-

specific medals to honor those who answer the call and serve in harm’s way; and

     WHEREAS, Many of our military professionals consider the wearing of campaign

ribbons and medals on their chests to be resumes of what they have done, where they have gone

and symbols of the sacrifice they have made for their nation; and

     WHEREAS, Unfortunately the Pentagon has decided to not issue a campaign-specific

medal for Afghanistan or the current conflict in Iraq and this is a departure from the long-standing

military tradition of issuing such medals; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby respectfully requests that the President of the United States order the Pentagon to issue

campaign-specific medals for Operation Iraqi Freedom and the campaign in Afghanistan; and be

it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the President of the United States of America.
