H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING MAY 3-7, 2004 AS "CHARTER SCHOOLS WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Since the 1995 passage of Rhode Island’s charter schools enabling

legislation, 10 start-up institutions have been established, and created whole new learning

communities from scratch; and

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island’s charter schools serve nearly 2,000 students, and, by

providing quality education to students, charter schools contribute to the statewide effort to

improve education in Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, Charter schools encourage community and parental involvement in the

education of our youth; and

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island’s charter schools serve many at risk students from high

poverty urban areas, and provide real choices for many low-income parents unable to afford

expensive private schools; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby proclaims May 3-7, 2004 as “Rhode Island Charter Schools

Week”, and recognizes the achievement of our 10 charter schools; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the principals of Rhode Island’s 10 charter

schools.
