S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CELEBRATION OF FOSTER OLD HOME DAYS

     

     Introduced By: Senators Blais, and Breene

     Date Introduced: June 17, 2004

 

 

     WHEREAS, The township of Foster, located in western Rhode Island on the Connecticut

border, is inhabited by around four thousand people; and

     WHEREAS, A geographically hilly and wooded bucolic area, the populace of Foster

possess a deep pride in their historic town. Among the treasured events is the annual celebration

of Foster Old Home Days; and

     WHEREAS, In the summer of 1904, the Town of Foster held its first Old Home Days in

order to raise capital for the upkeep of the Town House. The tradition was continued for the next

few years with everyone gathering one day a year for a big picnic at the town grounds; and

     WHEREAS, After the initial first few years of the picnic, the Foster Center Baptist

Church assumed responsibility for the event until the early 1980s; at that point in time a group

formed to organize the occasion of Foster's 1982 Bicentennial; and

     WHEREAS, This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the celebration of Foster Old

Home Days. The event now encompasses three days of fun and food. This year it will feature

numerous 4-H exhibits, tractor pulls, concerts, local crafts and a traditional Rhode Island favorite,

clamcakes and chowder; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby recognizes and celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Foster Old Home Days and urges the

citizens of the State of Rhode Island to delve into the rich history of the town and enjoy the

festivities; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Foster Town Clerk Anne M. Irons.
