S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 16, 2004 AS STEPFAMILY DAY

     WHEREAS, First celebrated in 1997 by Christy Borgeld, founder of the National

Stepfamily Association of America, Stepfamily Day is held in honor of the many stepfamilies

who symbolize and promote rearing children well, creating and maintaining strong family

structures and the supporting of each family member; and

     WHEREAS, Today approximately half of all families in America have "step" relatives, in

some way or another. Therefore, it has been the goal of the Stepfamily Association to enhance

the degree of society's accepting and supporting stepfamilies as a part of our social fabric; and

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island, itself, is the home of many upon many stepfamilies made up

of loving stepparents and children who prove their love for one another by standing by one

another through all of life's trials, troubles, and triumphs; and

     WHEREAS, In Rhode Island, Stepfamily Day is held in honor of these families who are

a true asset to the lives they touch and the positive effect they have on strengthening the fabric of

American families and society; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims September 16, 2004, as Stepfamily Day; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Christy Borgeld.
