H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER TO BE "ITALIAN HERITAGE MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Giannini, Trillo, Voccola, Ucci, and Kennedy

     WHEREAS, America's "Great Migration" of the late 1800's and early 1900's brought

many Italian immigrants to her shores. They came in search of a better life for themselves and

their children, and they were willing to work tirelessly to accomplish these goals; and

     WHEREAS, Literature and the arts, business and economics, politics and community

service have all been evocatively impacted by Italian-American men and women. Great

innovators such as Amedeo Obici, Mario Pweruzzi, Robert DiRomualdo, Leonard Riggio, Attilio

Piccirilli and his five brothers, Constantino Brummidi and Filippo Mazzei, to name just a few, are

all Italian Americans who have unequivocally molded and shaped the landscape of American

history; and

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island's prominent and sizeable Italian population has and continues

to make substantial contributions to all aspects of the state's milieu, as well as being valuable

contributors to Rhode Island's rich cultural diversity; and

     WHEREAS, The noble purpose of proclaiming a special month as "Italian Heritage

Month" is to celebrate and acknowledge the multitudinous accomplishments and significant

contributions provided to all the citizens of Rhode Island by people of Italian heritage and

culture; and

     WHEREAS, Let us also take this month to remember and pay special tribute to those

Italian-American men and women who have and are serving with the United States military and

who have selflessly sacrificed to defend our freedom; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby proclaims the month of October to be "Italian Heritage Month" in

the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Frank M. D'Alessandro, M.D.
