H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

MEMORIALIZING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO CONTINUE FUNDING FOR

THE RESTORATION OF RHODE ISLAND'S SALT PONDS

     

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Lewiss, Shanley, Malik, Carter, and Costantino

     Date Introduced: March 15, 2005

 

 

     WHEREAS, The restoration of salt ponds in Rhode Island has been a coordinated effort

among state and federal agencies. Initial funding for this environmental project was provided for

in the federal budget; and

     WHEREAS, The project's current focus is on the rehabilitation of Ninigret Pond.

Additional funding is critical in order to finish breachway dredging work, necessary for the

pond's continued environmental health; and

     WHEREAS, Work on Quonochontaug and Winnapaug ponds is also in jeopardy at this

time due to lack of continuing federal support; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby applauds the enormously beneficial work already accomplished in

the restoration of Rhode Island's salt ponds and urgently requests the United States Congress to

provide full funding for the continuation and completion of this eminently worthy project; and be

it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation and

the Coastal Resources Management Council.
