H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

DECLARING THE WEEK OF MAY 8TH -- MAY 14TH AS RHODE ISLAND WILD PLANT

WEEK

     

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Shanley, Lally, Scott, Naughton, and Watson

     Date Introduced: March 30, 2005

 

 

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Wild Plant Society is a native plant conservation

organization whose mission is to educate all Rhode Island citizens about their state's botanical

heritage; and

     WHEREAS, As an advocate for the preservation of native plants and their habitats, the

society has an extensive annual series of outdoor programs that provide the opportunity to view

native plants in Rhode Island's most beautiful natural settings; and

     WHEREAS, Every year the society holds a Spring plant sale, featuring wildflowers and

native shrubs that are hard to find in local nurseries. In addition, they make inventory services and

stewardship advice available to landowners; and

     WHEREAS, The society provides ongoing educational programs that reach out to

schools, libraries and the general public and a certificate program in native plant studies. There

are also a calendar of events consisting of: Mushroom walks, exploring Prudence Island, a walk

at Coggeshall Farm, a wild plant walk at Tri-Pond, Richard Champlin Memorial Walk and

collecting wild plant seeds; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby recognizes May 8th through May 14th as Rhode Island Wild Plant

Week; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society.
