H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

DECLARING SEPTEMBER 3, 2005 TO BE "LEAVE NO TRACE" DAY IN RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The Leave No Trace Center For Outdoor Ethics is a non-profit organization

whose mission is to promote and inspire responsible outdoor recreation through education,

research, and partnerships; and

     WHEREAS, Leave No Trace is an educational message, rooted in scientific studies and

common sense, that helps public land visitors understand and practice their own minimum impact

ethic. The Leave No Trace Program is useful for all outdoor enthusiasts, regardless of whether

they are on a day hike or a month-long mountaineering expedition; and

     WHEREAS, The Leave No Trace message has seven principles for responsible recreation

on public lands for which they advocate: first and foremost, plan ahead and prepare; know the

regulations for the area you are visiting and be prepared for emergencies, bad weather, and

special hazards; second, travel and camp on durable surfaces like trails and campsites; third,

dispose of waste properly, do not leave a mess behind; fourth, leave what you find. Preserve the

past and do not alter things that you come in contact with; fifth, minimize campfire impacts. Few

things can harm an environment like a campfire not properly tended; sixth, respect wildlife. Do

not follow or approach them, do not feed them, and avoid wildlife during sensitive times such as

mating, nesting or when they are tending to the young; finally, be considerate of other visitors,

and respectful and courteous to others; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby declares Saturday, September 3, 2005 to be "Leave No Trace" Day

in Rhode Island and thanks the Leave No Trace Center For Outdoor Ethics organization for all

they do to teach about and promote responsible outdoor recreation; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Steve Johnson.
