H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO REPEAL THE 3% TAX ON PHONE

SERVICE    

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Amaral, Savage, Long, Gemma, and Diaz

     WHEREAS, In 1898 the United States Congress passed legislation that placed a tax on

phone service. The tax monies were earmarked to pay for the Spanish American War; and

     WHEREAS, The tax was later repealed, but was eventually reinstated at 3% to pay for

World War I; and

     WHEREAS, This tax was originally and upon reinstatement intended to have a limited

duration; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby urges the congress of the United States to repeal the 107 year old

3% tax on telephone service as there is no longer justification for the continuation of this burden

on the American public; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to all members of the Rhode Island Congressional

Delegation.
