S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 6-10 TO BE "SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, School counselors are employed in public and private schools to help

students reach their full potential; and

     WHEREAS, School counselors are actively committed to helping students explore their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents as these traits relate to career awareness and

development; and

     WHEREAS, School counselors help parents focus on ways to further the educational,

personal and social growth of their children; and

     WHEREAS, School counselors work with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential and set realistic goals for themselves; and

     WHEREAS, School counselors seek to identify and utilize community resources that can enhance and complement comprehensive school counseling programs and help students become productive members of society; and

     WHEREAS, Comprehensive developmental school counseling programs are considered an integral part of the educational process that enables all students to achieve success in school; and

     WHEREAS, In Rhode Island, the Board of Regents for the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has endorsed the "RI Framework for Comprehensive K-12 School Counseling Programs." These guidelines will help Rhode Island's school districts to develop pro-active school counseling programs that will support the academic, career, and

personal-social needs of all students; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims the week of February 6-10, 2006 as School Counseling Week in the State of Rhode Island. We urge the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education and all the

citizens of Rhode Island to continue to appreciate, promote, and advocate for school counselors and counseling programs; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Commissioner of Elementary and

Secondary Education and the Rhode Island School Counselor Association.
