S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N

RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE RHODE ISLAND FOUNDATION AND THE UNITED WAY ESTABLISH A COMMISSION TO EXPLORE THE FORMATION OF A GOVERNING BOARD TO INSTITUTE AND OVERSEE ETHICAL STANDARDS, COMPLIANCE AND

MONITORING OF NOT-FOR-PROFIT ENTITIES

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island benefits from a proud history of vital and compassionate not-

for-profit hospital and community services; and

     WHEREAS, Hospitals and other not-for-profit entities comply with numerous regulatory

and legal requirements to ensure the highest quality of care and professional conduct; and

     WHEREAS, The corporate leadership of the state's hospitals and other not-for-profit

entities recognizes the need to maintain the highest ethical behavior; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby requests the Rhode Island Foundation in conjunction with the United Way to form a study

commission to explore the establishment of a governing board to institute and oversee ethical

standards, compliance and monitoring for not-for-profit entities in the state; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this Senate requests that said commission shall report its findings to

the President of the Senate on or before March 15, 2007; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island Foundation and the United

Way.
