H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

SUPPORTING A SISTER STATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN

THE COUNTRY OF LATVIA AND THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island and the country of Latvia have many economic

and cultural similarities; and

     WHEREAS, Preserving the rich historic architectural resources has been an important

priority in encouraging tourism and economic development for both the Country of Latvia and the

State of Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, Both Providence, the capitol city of Rhode Island, and Riga, the capitol city

of Latvia, share a rich maritime and manufacturing history; and

     WHEREAS, In both the City of Providence and the City of Riga, the harbor is an integral

part of the cities' economic development; and

     WHEREAS, Encouraging trade and cultural exchange between the country of Latvia and

the State of Rhode Island will mutually benefit both; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby supports a sister state relationship between the country of Latvia

and the State of Rhode Island to increase both cultural and economic exchange; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Governor Donald Carcieri and Juriys Strods,

Minister of Economy, Republic of Latvia.
