H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO FULLY FUND FEDERAL HIGHWAY PROGRAMS IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     

     

     Introduced By: Representatives E Coderre, Kilmartin, San Bento, O`Neill, and Dennigan

     Date Introduced: January 23, 2007

 

     

     WHEREAS, A properly structured and vigilantly maintained transportation infrastructure

is crucial for the vitality of commerce, and essential for the short and long-term prosperity and

growth of Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island is almost entirely dependent on federal aid for the

maintenance and construction of its roadways and bridges; and

     WHEREAS, Currently, Rhode Island has only received a small portion of the federally

authorized dollars from the current fiscal year federal budget. The new Congress must take

action in order to appropriate the full amount of the funds originally allocated for Rhode Island;

and

     WHEREAS, In addition to the serious degeneration of Rhode Island's byways, the

construction and maintenance projects funded through federal transportation spending programs

also create continuing work for more than 50 companies that concentrate in road and bridge

building, and related fields. The current halt in construction is thus negatively affecting the

livelihood of hundreds of Rhode Islanders; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby respectfully requests the United States Congress to take immediate

action to authorize full funding of the federal transportation act apportioned for Rhode Island; and

be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island Congressional delegation.
