S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF APRIL 23, 2007 AS THE "GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

      WHEREAS, Founded in April of 1890, and chartered by the United States Congress in

1901, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) is one of the oldest nonpartisan,

nondenominational women’s volunteer service organizations in the world; and

       WHEREAS, The GFWC is dedicated to “community improvement by enhancing the lives

of others through volunteer service”; and

      WHEREAS, The organization has enriched and expanded the voice and role of women on

almost every issue of historic importance. Whether in the arts and conservation, to education and

international affairs, the GFWC has helped women to attain a distinguished record of community

commitment, contributions, and service; and

      WHEREAS, Internationally, GFWC members have contributed, on an average, around

$35 million and have volunteered over 13 million hours through more than 160,000 local club

projects, to produce immense improvements in their communities; and

      WHEREAS, Currently, Rhode Island has 10 women’s clubs across the state, all working

on local club projects for the betterment and enrichment of our Ocean State; now, therefore be it

      RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims the week of April 23, 2007 to be “General Federation of Women's Clubs

Volunteers in Action Week”; and be it further

      RESOLVED, That this Senate recognizes and thanks the GFWC for more than a century

of commitment to encouraging women “to improve their skills, expand their rights, and apply

their abilities and special sensitivity to the problems of their communities and nations”; and be it

further

      RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
