S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N

DESIGNATING MAY 27, 2007 TO BE "RACHEL CARSON DAY" IN THE STATE OF

RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Rachel Carson was born on May 27, 1907, in Springdale, Pennsylvania; and

     WHEREAS, Rachel Carson and her colleagues took a heroic and significant step on the

path toward awareness of the hazards of chemical pesticide use and the advantages of alternatives

in her book "Silent Spring"; and

     WHEREAS, Continued development and use of chemical pesticides instead of low-risk

alternatives indicate that additional stops along this path are warranted; and

     WHEREAS, "Silent Spring" noted that the abundance, diversity and quality of all life on

earth may depend significantly on our ability and willingness to travel this path; and

     WHEREAS, Each of us can contribute to and take part in this crucial journey; now,

therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims May 27, 2007 to be "Rachel Carson Day" in the State of Rhode Island. We

furthermore urge all the residents of this state to refrain from the use of chemical pesticides and to

explore low-risk alternatives post management methods.
