H O U S E  R E S O L U T I O N

COMMEMORATING THE RE-DEDICATION OF CAMP AMES

     

     

     Introduced By: Representatives McNamara, and Gorham

     Date Introduced: May 22, 2007

 

     WHEREAS, On September 26, 2007 the Elishea Dyer Camp No. 7 of the Rhode Island

Department of Union veterans of the Civil War will commemorate the site of Camp Ames, the

last remaining Civil War camp ground and training field in Warwick, located at Spring Green,

adjacent to the Peter Barrett Funeral Home; and

     WHEREAS, Camp Ames was the training ground for the Third Rhode Island Heavy

Artillery, which subsequently became the Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. They quickly responded

to the call of President Lincoln to defend the City of Washington from possible attack by

Confederate forces at the outbreak of the Civil War; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby joins the Warwick Historical Society in commemorating the re-

dedication of Camp Ames and honoring the Third Rhode Island Heavy Artillery for their heroic

service to our nation during the Civil War; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Henry A. L. Brown of the Warwick

Historical Society.
